Debit, credit or prepaid: why it matters for the deposit

For the deposit, the rental company wants to be able to block an amount without collecting it. With a credit card the hold counts against your card limit, not your account. With a debit card the money leaves your account: that is why many refuse it or accept it only on conditions. Note: a card with the Visa or Mastercard logo can still be a debit card.

What the rental companies' terms say

We read the terms each rental company publishes for Italy (October 18, 2026). The result is not an absolute yes or no: those that accept debit cards often do so only for some categories or with a package; those that refuse them may make exceptions at the desk. The table shows, for the most searched places, how many of the rental companies there accept them: each row leads to the page with the offers.

What happens when a debit card is accepted

Before you book

If the desk refuses your card
